And How To Be Them

A Manual of Manners
for Polite Children
by Gelett Burgess

Introduction

Let
me introduce a race
Void of beauty and of grace,
Extraordinary creatures
With many undesirable features.
Though their actions show strong will,
They have manners stranger still,
For in rudeness they're precocious,
They're atrocious, they're ferocious!
Yet you will learn, if you are bright,
Politeness from the impolite.
When you've finished with this book.,
At your conduct take a look.
Ask yourself, upon the spot,
Are you Goop, or are you Not?
For although it's fun to see them,
It is terrible to be them!

Barbara
Ross......."In
1885, my grandmother, a proper teen, moved from Boston to
Montana in a covered wagon. After completing her education,
she became a school teacher in a small one-room schoolhouse,
met a local cattle rancher and married.
He
built a log house for their home where they raised six children,
my father being his first son, born in 1901. Goops
was a large part of my father's young life as long as he
could remember. To him, it represented happy times.
Soon
I was enjoying Goops at my grandmother's house. When
my son was born, Goops arrived in my house for his
enjoyment. Goops became so soiled and worn, due to
generations of loving hands, that when my grandson was born
I felt the need to have Goops restored, to be shared
by all of his generation, too.
